1.6 CONDICION DE ALFABETISMO
El 87,5% (44 023) de los productores agropecuarios individuales
que conducen el 82,7% (820 598,06 Has.) de las tierras agropecua-
rias, saben leer y escribir. El 12,1 % restante que conduce el 16,6%
de las tierras, por su condici¢n de analfabetos, est n en desventaja
para conocer por medios escritos lo relacionado con la t‚cnica y
administraci¢n de sus respectivas unidades productivas.
a. Seg£n Provincia
Esta situaci¢n es parecida en las ocho provincias del departa-
mento, siendo menor el porcentaje de productores alfabetos en la-
provincia de La Uni¢n (71,8% del total de productores, con un manejo
del 64,7 % de la superficie total) y mayor en la provincia de Are-
quipa (94.6 %).

b. Seg£n Grupos de Edad
En todos los grupos de edad es predominante el porcentaje de pro-
ductores que saben leer y escribir. El m s alto, 95,4 %, corresponde a
los que tienen menos de 30 a¤os de edad, siguiendo una tendencia de-
creciente en los dem s grupos, hasta bajar a 77,7% en el grupo de pro-
ductores que tienen 65 y m s a¤os de edad.

c. Seg£n Regi¢n Natural
El mayor porcentaje de productores alfabetos de la Costa, est
entre los productores menores de 30 a¤os (96,6 %), de all¡ conforme
aumenta la edad del productor, disminuye la probabilidad, de que ‚ste,
sepa leer y escribir.
En la Sierra donde el 85,6 % de los productores sabe leer y es-
cribir (en la Costa este porcentaje es de 93,0 %), se dan las mismas
tendencias que a nivel departamental, siendo los menores de 30 a¤os
los que representan, la mayor proporci¢n de alfabetos de la regi¢n
(94,9 %).
d. Seg£n Tama¤o de las Unidades Agropecuarias
La distribuci¢n de la condici¢n de alfabetismo seg£n el tama¤o de
las UA, registra que entre los minifundistas, peque¤os y medianos pro-
ductores el porcentaje de los que leen y escriben no presenta una am-
plia variaci¢n (86,1 %, 92,7 %, 89,2 % respectivamente), para luego
bajar en el estrato de de los grandes agricultores a 79,2 %.
