2.4.7 Poblaci¢n de Aves
Seg£n el censo de 1994, en el departamento de Arequipa existen 3
065 791 aves de corral, de las cuales 3 006 907 (98,1%) son gallinas,
pollos y gallos; 25 514 (0,8 %) pavos y 33 370 (1,1 %) patos.
Es importante conocer que, en una misma Unidad Agropecuaria,
puede criarse una o m s de estas especies.
Por tama¤o de la poblaci¢n destacan las gallinas, gallos y
pollos en sus diferentes categor¡as, seguidas por los patos y en
£ltima instancia por los pavos.
A nivel provincial, Arequipa posee el mayor volumen poblacional
con 2 463 633 aves de las cuales 99,1 % son gallinas, gallos y
pollos; 0,4 % pavos; y 0,5 %, patos; seguida de Caylloma con 39 244
aves de las cuales, 78,3 % son gallinas, gallos y pollos; 12,5 %
pavos; y el 9,1 % patos. Por £ltimo, Camana tiene 37 808 aves de las
cuales, 74,2 % son gallinas, gallos y pollos; 7,9 %, pavos; y 17,9 %,
patos.

La evoluci¢n de la poblaci¢n de pollos, gallinas y gallos,
reportada por los censos de 1972 y de 1994, indica que la poblaci¢n
ha tenido un ascenso de 70,2 % en los £ltimos 22 a¤os; lo que
representa una tasa de crecimiento intercensal anual de 9,9 %.

En Arequipa de las 3 006 907 gallinas, gallos y pollos; el 0,1 %
se cr¡an en UA sin tierras y el 99,9 % en unidades agropecuarias con
tierras, de las cuales el 27,7 % se cr¡an en minifundios y peque¤as
unidades; y 72,2 % en unidades agropecuarias medianas y grandes. La
tendencia que se observa en la crianza de pavos y patos es diferente.
En la regi¢n Costa, se encuentra que el 20,3 % de los pollos,
gallinas y gallos se cr¡an en mini y peque¤as unidades agropecuarias
(de menos de 3,0 Has. y 3,0 a 9,9 Has.) y el 79,7 % de estas especies
se cr¡an en medianas, grandes unidades agropecuarias (de 10,0 a 49,9
Has. y de 50,0 y m s Has.). La crianza de pavos y patos es similar
al departamental.
En la Sierra, el 83,0 % de pollos, gallinas, gallos se cr¡an en
los estratos de menos 3,0 y 3,0 a 9,9 Has. y 16,5 % en los medianos y
grandes unidades agropecuarias. La misma relaci¢n de tendencia se
observa en la crianza de pavos y patos.
