2.5.7 Poblaci¢n de Aves
Seg£n el censo de 1994, en el departamento existen 793 120 aves
de corral, de las cuales el 712 271 (89,8 %) son pollos, gallinas
y gallos; 25 845 (3,3 %) son pavos y 55 004 (6,9 %) son patos.
Es importante conocer que, en una misma Unidad Agropecuaria,
puede criarse una o m s de estas especies.
Por tama¤o de la poblaci¢n destacan las gallinas, gallos y pollos
en sus diferentes categor¡as, seguidas por los patos y en £ltima
instancia por los pavos.
a. Seg£n Provincia
A nivel provincial, destaca La Convenci¢n con 342 562 aves que
conforman el mayor volumen de poblaci¢n de los cuales 84,8 % son
gallinas, gallos y pollos, con 8,6 % estan los patos y finalmente los
pavos con 6,6 %. En segundo plano est la provincia de Urubamba con una
poblaci¢n de 63 082 aves, de las cuales el 88,1 % son gallinas, gallos
y pollos, el 10,7 % conforman los patos y £ltimo est n los pavos con
1,2 %.

La evoluci¢n de la poblaci¢n de pollos, gallinas y gallos
reportada por los censos de 1972 y 1994 indica, que la poblaci¢n
de aves ha tenido un incremento de 107,0 % en los £ltimos 22 a¤os con
una tasa de crecimiento intercensal anual de 3,4 %.

Es importante recalcar que la crianza de aves, en sus diversas
categor¡as en UA sin tierras, es m¡nima porcentualmente en el departa-
mento del Cusco.
Como se puede apreciar la crianza se da en un 100,0 % aproximada-
mente en UA con tierras, si hablamos de gallinas, gallos y pollos
observamos que el 46,5 % de la poblaci¢n, corresponde a los minifun-
distas, el 28,6 % a los peque¤os, el 20,2 % a los medianos productores
y finalmente el 4,3 % a la gran agricultura.
En la crianza de pavos, los medianos productores tienen
el 46,0 % y en patos los minifundios tienen el 42,5 % de la poblaci¢n.
En la Sierra, en la crianza de pollos, gallinas y gallos, pavos
y patos, destacan los minifundios con el 61,5 %, 36,8 % y 66,7 %,
respectivamente. En cambio, en la Selva destaca, las especies indicadas
en los medianos productores.
