1.6 CONDICION DE ALFABETISMO
El 90,7 % de los 72 652 productores agropecuarios individuales
que conducen el 92,8 % del total de tierras agropecuarias, saben leer
y escribir. En cambio el 6,4 % que conducen el 5,7 % de las tierras,
por su condici¢n de analfabetos, est n en desventaja para conocer por
medios escritos, lo relacionado con la t‚cnica y administraci¢n de
sus respectivas unidades productivas.
a. Seg£n Provincia
La situaci¢n descrita es parecida en las diez provincias del
departamento. Alcanzando los m s altos valores de alfabetismo, en las
provincias de: Huarochir¡ (93,9%), Ca¤ete (93,0 %) y Huaral (92,9%);
Los m s bajos en Cajatambo (86,5%), Huaura (86,7 %) y Oy¢n (86,8 %).

b. Seg£n Grupos de Edad
En todos los grupos de edad es predominante el porcentaje de
productores que saben leer y escribir. El m s alto, 97,8%, correspon-
den a los menores de 30 a¤os de edad, siguiendo una tendencia decre-
ciente en los dem s grupos, hasta 87,4 % en el grupo de productores
que tienen 65 a¤os y m s.

c. Seg£n Tama¤o de las Unidades Agropecuarias
De otra parte, la condici¢n de afabetismo, seg£n el tama¤o de
las UA, muestra una relaci¢n variante de los productores.
Los que saben leer y escribir constituyen el 90,6%, en el estra-
to del minifundio, baja a 90,4 % en el estrato de los peque¤os, crece
hasta 93,9%, en los medianos, para disminuir a 93,1% en la gran agri-
cultura.

d. Seg£n Regi¢n Natural
Los resultados del censo de 1994, indican que los alfabetos
constituyen el 91,3 % de los productores de la Costa y el 90,0 % de
los agricultores de la Sierra; y los que no saben leer y escribir,
representan el 6,8 % de los agricultores de la Costa y el 6,0 % de la
Sierra.
La Costa a nivel de estratos sigue la tendencia departamental,
fluct£ando el porcentaje de alfabetos entre 91,9% (en los minifundis-
tas), 89,6 % (peque¤os productores), 95,2 % (medianos productores) y
94,3 % (en los grandes productores). En cambio, en la Sierra se
observa una tendencia creciente, al vincular la condici¢n de alfabe-
tismo con el tama¤o de las unidades agropecuarias, del 89,3 % en el
minifundio, hasta 93,0 % en el estrato de la gran agricultura.
