1.6 CONDICION DE ALFABETISMO
El 69,4 % de los 144 016 productores agropecuarios individuales
que conducen el 78,3 % del total de tierras agropecuarias, saben leer
y escribir. En cambio, el 29,8 % que conducen el 20,6 % de las
tierras, por su condici¢n de analfabetos, est n en desventaja para
conocer por medios escritos lo relacionado con la t‚cnica y
administraci¢n de sus respectivas unidades productivas.
a. Seg£n Provincia
La situaci¢n descrita es parecida en las trece provincias del
departamento, donde la mayor¡a de los productores individuales son
alfabetos. La provincia de Paucartambo es la de menor porcentaje con
productores alfabetos (62,5 %). La provincia con mayor porcentaje de
productores alfabetos es Cusco (76,8 %).

b. Seg£n Grupos de Edad
En casi todos los grupos de edad es predominante el porcentaje
de productores que saben leer y escribir. S¢lo en el grupo de mayor
edad (65 y m s a¤os), los analfabetos (59,2 %) superan en proporci¢n a
los alfabetos (40,0 %).

c. Seg£n Tama¤o de las Unidades Agropecuarias
La condici¢n de alfabetismo seg£n los estratos, muestra una
relaci¢n creciente de los productores alfabetos a medida que aumenta
el tama¤o de las UA.
Los que saben leer y escribir constituyen el 67,2 %, en el
estrato del minifundio, crece a 71,4 % en el estrato de los peque¤os,
a 77,4 % en el estrato de la mediana agricultura, hasta llegar a
80,4 % en el estrato de la gran agricultura.

d. Seg£n Regi¢n Natural
Los resultados del censo de 1994 indican que los alfabetos
constituyen el 68,4 % de los productores de la Sierra y el 75,9 % de
los agricultores de la Selva; y los que no saben leer y escribir,
representan el 30,8 % de los agricultores de la Sierra y el 23,1 % de
la Selva.
En ambas regiones se observa una tendencia creciente, a mayor
tama¤o de las unidades agropecuarias, mayor porcentaje de alfabetos.
Asi tenemos que es mayor el porcentaje de alfabetos, tanto en la
Sierra como en la Selva, en el estrato de los grandes UA (77,5 % y
87,4 % respectivamente).
