1.6 CONDICION DE ALFABETISMO
El 73,8 % de los 198 586 productores agropecuarios individua-
les que conducen el 78,3 % del total de tierras agropecuarias, saben
leer y escribir. En cambio, el 25,1 % que conducen el 20,7 % de las
tierras, por su condici¢n de analfabetos, est n en desventaja para
conocer por medios escritos lo relacionado con la t‚cnica y adminis-
traci¢n de sus respectivas unidades productivas.
a. Seg£n Provincia
La situaci¢n descrita es parecida en todas las provincias del
departamento, siendo en Contumaz donde se presenta el mayor porcen-
taje de productores alfabetos (90,1 %), y el menor porcentaje de
‚stos se encuentra en Hualgayoc (64,1 %).

b. Seg£n Grupos de Edad
En todos los grupos de edad es predominante el porcentaje de
productores que saben leer y escribir. El m s alto, 88,8 %,
corresponde a los que tienen menos de 30 a¤os de edad, siguiendo una
tendencia decreciente en los dem s grupos, hasta llegar a 53,0 % en
el grupo de productores que tienen de 65 y m s a¤os de edad.

c. Seg£n Tama¤o de las Unidades Agropecuarias
De otra parte, la condici¢n de alfabetismo, seg£n los
estratos, muestra una relaci¢n creciente de los productores
alfabetos a medida que aumenta el tama¤o de las unidades agropecua-
rias, esto es de 71,1 % en el estrato del minifundio, hasta 81,7 %
en el estrato de los grandes productores.
d. Seg£n Regi¢n Natural
Los resultados del censo de 1994 indican que los alfabetos
constituyen el 85,5 % de los productores de la Costa, el 72,0 % de
la Sierra y el 80,5 % de la Selva; y los que no saben leer y
escribir, representan el 13,1 % de los agricultores de la Costa, el
26,8 % de la Sierra y 18,7 % de la Selva.
En las tres regiones, se observa que el n£mero de productores
alfabetos crece a medida que aumenta el tama¤o de las unidades agro-
pecuarias. Es preciso se¤alar que el mayor porcentaje de alfabetos
en la Costa, Sierra y Selva se encuentra en el estrato de los
grandes productores con 92,1 %, 79,8 % y 86,4 %, respectivamente.
